BackPacks for Hunger
In cooperation with our West Babylon school district, "Backpacks for Hunger" (BPFH) are coordinated food drives throughout the year to help feed our own West Babylon students and their families attending any of our WB schools.
Food drives are held at one of our local supermarkets, donations are accepted, sorted, packed, and then transported to our school's Administration Building. Each student gets a box (BackPack) full of various non perishable food items to take home from school. Distribution dates vary, but they are before the different vacation breaks during the school year.
The West Babylon Senior High School (Administration Building) is the distribution point for all boxed donations going home to our student's families.
West Babylon Main Street Organization introduced our “Adopt-a-Family” initiative a few years ago as part of our Backpacks for Hunger Campaign. This was a huge success which led to nearly 100 families in the West Babylon School District receiving “backpacks” of food four times a year (During the 3 main school recesses and for summer recess).
When you adopt a family for the year, it simply means that you would be donating food items to a West Babylon family four times this school year. Our neediest children receiving free or reduced lunch and/or breakfast may go hungry during these recesses. Our anti-hunger program provides students with food during those times. You will receive a list of suggested items and an empty bag to fill the items in. All you need to do is return the bag with food to us and we will take care of dropping them off and getting the empty bag back to you. We will let you know the timelines to have the filled bags in order for us to deliver them to the schools on time for the children. The approximate cost to fill a bag is around $40 but that amount spent is completely up to you. Lastly, we are a 501 3(c), so save your receipts and use them for a tax write off when you do your taxes.
